Figures 7, 8, 9 and 10 show the performances of the existing compressors on the market: for sake of privacy, the data is presented anonymously, eliminating the manufacturer’s name. Data have been organized as a function of: a) Pressure delivered at rated and zero flow: the first condition refers to the usual design operation, the second one, frequent in reality, when the load/unload control is used. This control is also known as constant-speed control, allows the motor to run continuously, but unloads the compressor 34 when the discharge pressure is adequate.
Figure 6 shows the area of intervention of the different compressor technologies: centrifugal compressors have, with respect to the rotary ones, major common areas but they are confined to higher pressure ratio, where specific purposed must be fulfilled (compressed air for processes); axial 33 (but also centrifugal) are justified for very high flow rate not usually required for compressed air end use applications. So, in the range 7-12 bar and flow rates less than 1000 m3/min with an electrical power range from a few kW to several hundred kW, rotary volumetric machines represent the reference technology.
